Week 9 540 Preview

Week 9 is here the season is winding down for some but for others, things are just now getting warmed up. Some big games across the 540 tonight so once again I am asking you yes YOU if you're reading this go out to a game tonight that catches your interest I know you have a raincoat so no excuses :).

       INTRIGUING MATCH-UPS

   #2 Mountain View (7-0) at Patriot (5-2)

These two teams both come into tonight's contest vying for position in the region 6B playoff standings. Mountain View is currently sitting in first place of the region while the Pioneers are currently taking up residence in the 6 slot. I know many of our readers don't know too much about Patriot even though they aren't too far away. The Pioneers come into this game boasting a bruising running led by Big Offensive Linemen Alaric Aherns (6'2 270) and Bryan Rudd (6'3 275). Running behind that big physical Oline is one of the quickest RBs in not just the region but in the state. (RB) Jackson McCarter has already rushed for 1,211 yards this season and is nearly averaging a first down every time he carries the ball with a 9.7 yards per carry average. The Pioneers have had a lot of success incorporating RPO into their offense so look for their QB Tyler Knutson to look to try and sneak some passes in the Wildcat secondary. The Pioneers only 2 losses come to Westfield (5-2) and Colonial Forge (7-1) this Pioneers team has gotten better as the weeks have gone on and 2 weeks ago they took on their new unbeaten rivals Gainseville and absolutely put it on them 56-26 this is a good Patriot team that is looking to pull off an upset and put themselves in good standing in the playoffs. As for the Wildcats this road trip to Nokesville may be new for this group of players, but this is Mountain View's 6th time playing Patriot and they are 3-2 all time against them. For the Wildcats the formula will be to minimize mistakes offensively and rely on their front 7 led by (LB) Nick English (LB) Jackson Hamil and (DL) Eric Mensah to limit Jackson McCarter. (RB) Torie Martin continues to play at a high level and (QB) Aaron Barber has been exactly what the Wildcats needed in their Senior QB a player that is comfortable distributing to all of his targets. This one will likely stay close for awhile.

#1 King George (7-0) at #5 Eastern View (7-0)

Back home in the 540 we will have one of the biggest match-ups of the entire year in this area. King George has been the big bullies on the block in the Battlefield district since the Spring 2021 season going 37-3 in that span 2 of those losses were in the playoffs against the eventual state champions. Many know by now that coming into tonight's game the Foxes are rolling with an active 33 game regular season winning streak that began back towards the end of the 2019 season. Who was their last regular season loss to? Well that would be Eastern View who blew by the Foxes in that game 40-14 at the time it was Eastern View that had dominated the Battlefield district which King George was building the program that that they are now but that's enough of the history lesson let's get in tonight's match-up. The Foxes will travel all the way west to Culpeper to play Eastern View for what has potential to be their toughest match-up of the season, of course you know the names for the Foxes and of course they haven't dissapointed, Chanz Wiggins and Mekhai White are simply impossible to keep in check for 4 quarters of football, especially when you have a QB like Jack Pearson back there who is willing and able to get the ball wherever he needs it to be. All that skill on the perimeter provides lighter boxes for huge (RB) Charles Johnson to run against making the Foxes hard to deal with on all fronts. The Cyclones do not need to be told how big of a game this is for them tonight. Last season the Cyclones fell behind 23-0 early before drawing closer making it a 23-13 game before King George was able to hold on and win the game by that score. It was a rare modest offensive night for the Foxes then and looking back at it now. The question will be if the Cyclones can play as well as they did in the second half of the game all game this year. (LB) Brett Clatterbaugh is who leads the Cyclones he's already had a game saving play this season stopping Daniel Coles at the goaline on a 2pt try, on offense (QB) Aaron Hull has done a great job and looks to the part more and more as each game goes by. His main target (WR) William Butler sits in the top 5 in the area for receiving yards amongst receivers. There will be plenty of college level talent on the field tonight, but who will have enough when it's all said and done these two programs have been the best in the district and hopefully this is the first of many big Battlefield district undefeated match-ups between the two.
