540 Preview Week 7

Week 7 is here and we are now officially OVER the half way mark of the season. These kids work so hard from December to late August to perform for 10 guaranteed games, so please get out and watch the young teens in your community put on a show for their school.

       INTRIGUING MATCH-UPS

   Massaponax (2-4) at #7 Brooke Point (4-2)

Last season this game wound up being anything but an intriguing match-up.The Black-Hawks smashed Massaponax and Daniel Coles scored a "modest" 5 Touchdowns. A quick glance at these two teams records and you have no reason to believe that another game like that is possible. But not so fast, when you look at the records of the 4 teams that Ponax have lost to their combined record is 19-2 indicating that the Panthers have taken some tough losses to some tough teams, and outside of their game against Mountain View the Panthers were competitive in these losses. Last week (QB) Ian Shook and the offense did a much better job at executing and keeping possession of the ball in turn the defense did much better and we saw the Panthers front actually give Colonial Forge some issues in the ground game. It will be crucial for the Panthers again to keep possession of the ball because they are squaring off against one of the best offenses in the district tonight who is led by future D-1 (RB) Daniel Coles who has looked every bit the part of a D-1 athlete through this teams first 6 games. (QB) Dombek has been great at distributing the ball to his weapons and last week he pulled off a fantastic last minute drive to knock off and hold off Stafford. For Massaponax the game will be about ball possession and controlling the clock. For Brooke it will be about improving defensively and continuing to feed Daniel Coles and make big plays.

#4 Mountain View (5-0) at #3 Colonial Forge (6-0)

As far as I'm concerned today this is the best rivalry in the 540. And to be honest it really isn't close between this rivalry and whatever the next closest rivalry in the 540 is, tonight's game will be packed from students parents and community members from both sides, it's what high school football is supposed to be about and there are a few that could take some lessons from these 2 in that department. Now as far as tonight's actual game is concerned this game has potential to be as good and exciting as any that these 2 have played. Last year the Eagles came in 3-3 and upset an extremely talented Mountain View team after (RB/LB) Jaevyn Peterson ripped the ball out of now Syracuse (RB) Ike Daniels hands and raced to the Endzone. That win led to the Eagles narrowly making the playoffs last season. This season for the first time as Mountain View and Colonial Forge will not just be battling each other for bragging rights or district standing, but also for playoff seeding. Right now Mountain View and Colonial Forge sit at #2 and #3 respectively in the VHSL power points in region 6B. The winner of tonight's game will likely jump the current number 1 seed Freedom Eagles (from Woodbridge of course) for the time being. For Mountain View the name of the game has been about creating turnovers, something they've done very well in their last 3 games and it's exactly what saved them last week. From their (QB) Aaron Barber will need to continue his fantastic distribution of the ball to several weapons including (WR) Pierre Harris (WR) RJ Winters and (WR) Daniel Crosby. Young (RB) Torie Martin found tougher sledding last week against Riverbend so it's on his Oline to create more movement up front tonight. For Colonial Forge they come into this one well seasoned in close match-ups earlier this season Colonial Forge came back and defeated Patriot 21-13 after falling behind 13-0 in the first half and then a week ago the Eagles were able to hold off a scrappy Ponax team winning it 14-7. They won those games the same way they won their other 4 games, trusting their ground game while finding big plays on offense and keeping the ball in front of them and creating mistakes on defense. The Eagles have a feared tandem in their backfield with Josiah Bryson and Jaevyn Peterson, but don't forget that (WR/DB) Ethen Horne is still a legit weapon and will likely get a couple of snaps behind center. This is a big game no other way to put it and I have the feeling it's going to be a great game.
