Week 5 540 Preview

Week 5 is upon us, and so far this season we have seen many teams stepping up to the occasion and making it hard for us to have a clear picture for who will be fighting spots in November, but it sure makes things fun to follow, now let's get into this weeks match-ups!

       INTRIGUING MATCH-UPS

   #6 Riverbend (2-1) at Highland Springs (3-1)

Riverbend enters tonights' game in the middle of an extremely difficult stretch of their schedule. 2 weeks ago the Bears took on Class 4 Contender King George, and this week they take on the 2022 Class 5 Champions, Highland Springs. For the Bears it will take a mistake-free performance from their offense to keep up with the Springers. Have I mentioned that the Springers have only lost 2 home games since 2016? The Springers are led by 2024 Maryland Commit (QB) Khristian Martin, offensively and (LB) Brennan Johnson defensively. The Springers have been a dominant power in the state for a few years now and are no strangers to Riverbend or the 540 area, the Springers are 10-1 against Fredericksburg area teams since 2000 and have dominated some of this areas best teams. The Bears Oline will have to work extra hard tonight to give Tanner Triplett time and open holes for JoJo Thomas on the ground.

#9 Massaponax (2-2) at #4 Mountain View (3-0)

As district play begins to start in 540 and across the state, I'm willing to argue we have one of the more interesting match-ups right here in the 540. Through 3 games Mountain View has been just about as dominant on the scoreboard as any team in the area outscoring their opponents with a 43 to 8 average, this week we expect things to be a little tougher for the Wildcats when district foe Massaponax comes to town. The Panthers have had a roller coaster start to their season and now sit at 2-2 with a pretty important match-up here in Game 5. William Wiggins and Donovan Phillips will continue to do the heavy lifting for the Panthers on the ground, but look for the Panthers to continue to find a way to get Gabe Newby-Morris involved in the offensive gameplan as well. Defensively the Panthers took a shock to the system giving up 40 points last week which was more than what they had given up total in their first 3 games. Speaking of 40, as we stated before that's around what the Wildcats are putting up per game. Many questions surrounded the Wildcats after losing so much offensive talent and so far through only 3 games new QB Aaron Barber has 8 TDs and no Interceptions, i'd say that's pretty good. Oh and their new RB Torie Martin who is top 5 in the area for rushing yards is pretty good too. Look for an inspired effort from the Panthers who will look to get back to being above .500 it will be interesting to see how the new look Wildcats respond to moments with adversity.
