Week 3 540 Preview

We are now entering week 3 of the season and the view of the areas best teams are beginning to take shape, and we have some great competitive games on the schedule this week. Last week teams like Brooke Point and King George had great weeks while Massaponax and Courtland suffered hard losses, the story continues tonight!

       INTRIGUING MATCH-UPS

   #1 King George (2-0) at #4 Riverbend (2-0)

These 2 programs were in vastly different situations just 5 years ago. After the 2018 Season both of these teams were 1-9 with a lot of questions surrounding these programs. Fast Forward 5 seasons both teams have made multiple playoff appearances and both teams are Top 5 in the area. In my opinion this is a testament to the great coaches on both of these staffs. Make no mistake both of these teams have great players that we will talk about soon but both Verns Lundsford and Nathan Yates deserve credit for not only getting these programs where they are currently but improving it and making it better than how they found it. As far as what will take place on the field, these first 2 weeks the Foxes have made it pretty clear how they're coming this year. Offensively the Foxes just have the right guys, Wiggins and White can beat you deep, they can beat you if you play soft coverage and if you pay too much attention to them good luck bringing down Charles Johnson or stopping some of the other under rated weapons they have on that side of the ball. Defensively the Foxes play many guys like Wiggins, Johnson, Alex Rolocut and Dylan Truxon both ways, and they are just as effective on defense as they are on offense. Riverbend has shown through 2 games that they also can points on the board in a hurry and actually average more points through 2 games than their opponents tonight. The Bears are known for their physical play and tonight will be no different. Look for JoJo Thomas and Amir Mateo to be the guys that Riverbend will look to in order to pull off this upset. The QB match-up between Tanner Triplett and Jack Pearson is probably the best QB match-up we will see in the 540 this season. Riverbend has had big time wins before over the past 2-3 seasons normally on the backs of suffocating defensive play, they will need that kind of performance again to upset the Foxes

Score Prediction
King George 31  Riverbend  20

#7 Louisa (2-0) at #10 Massaponax (1-1)

No matter who's under the helmet for the Lions Louisa always finds a way to dominate in August. No really they haven't lost in August since 2015. Last week they held on to beat Courtland 30-27. They might not have the quite the same quick strike explosiveness they had a season ago but these Lions are no joke. They will face off against a Ponax team who suffered a rare tough offensive night against a program that isn't used to seeing the Triple Option. Their opponent Glen Allen had a great sized Defensive line and gave the Panthers problems up front. I don't expect tonight's game to be so low scoring. This game will go back and forth look for Donovan Phillips and Adam Mills to be big time mall carriers in tonight's game for each team.

Score Prediction

Louisa 24 Massaponax 21

OTHER GAMES

* Projected Winners in bold

Potomac (0-2) at #2 Colonial Forge (2-0)

(Forge will look to continue to put up big offensive numbers against a defense that has surrendered 56 in both of their first 2 games)

#3 Kettle Run (1-0) at Handley (1-1)

(The Handley Bowl on a Saturday is a unique test for a Cougars team still introducing new players)

(The Black-Hawks bounced back in a big way last week they hit the road to face a star studded Indy team that has taken some rough early losses)

(Good 3rd week test for both of these squads both teams hoping to ramp up momentum after last weeks win)
