Week 9 Preview

We are officially in the closing stretch of the season which feels so weird to say considering I still remember how excited I was for the season to start. Don't pout yet though there is still plenty of football to be played.

Where I was right:

Another week has passed and I am now 12-1 in the games I have predicted this season... Gotta say, I'm pretty good

Where I was wrong:

Last season in my preseason poll my number 1 team (Massaponax) stayed there the entire season... This year my Pre-Season Number 1 is currently 3-4... Ouch, in my defense 3 of the 4 teams Forge has lost to are a combined 20-0 against VHSL competition... But they unfortunately haven't looked very competitive in those games outside of the first quarter against Mountain View... Not the normal Forge team this season,  I still expect them to secure a playoff spot however.

LOCKS OF THE WEEK

Caroline (0-7) at #10 Chancellor (2-2)

Chancellor comes into this game licking their wounds a little after being routed by King George last week. They are a in a better position now than a couple of days ago where it had looked like they had to forfeit their season opener against Massaponax, but even now the results are still up in the air. This is a game they have to win against a Caroline team that has lost their last 18 games

INTRIGUING MATCH-UPS

#6 Riverbend (5-2) at #9 Colonial Forge (3-4)

High school football: Heavyweights Colonial Forge, Massaponax ready to decide who reigns in area | High School | fredericksburg.com

It's really make or break time for the Eagles. They sit at 3-4 and 7th in their region a win tonight would be huge for their playoff chances. On the other side, their record may be better but in region 5D their position is the same as Forge 7th place with little room for error. The Bears do have more secure footing though, thanks to wins over Brooke Point and North Stafford who are both looking up at Riverbend in the Power Points standings. Last Spring Riverbend put the area on notice when they dominated Forge in their week 2 match-up, it was only their second win over Forge in program history. You can be sure the Eagles haven't forgotten... On the Eagles side expect them to try and be physical with the Bears with Khalis Garrett-Bey but don't sleep on their ability to try and pass the ball with weapons like Tico Palmer, Hiro Carr and Colby Kynard. On Riverbend's side it is a more balanced attack, Aiden Fisher is a bruising playmaker out the backfield but if you try to stack the box Tanner Triplett will carve you up the same way he has all season long... The difference maker I believe in this game will simply come down to motivation and will I'm not sure there is a huge talent gap between these two teams

Prediction: Rivebend 23 Colonial Forge 28

#8 Brooke Point (3-3) at #1 Mountain View (7-0)

I'll let you know now, I was tempted to put this on our Upset Alert game. But while BP winning tonight would certainly be an upset, it wouldn't be as surprising as the game we actually picked. As I said in our Top 10 ratings the Black-Hawks are a couple of plays away form being 5-1. This is a good football team, the ball just hasn't bounced their way at times this season. Noah Sanders, Daniel Coles and Christian Taylor are as dangerous as a threesome as anyone in the area and the team can put up points at any moment. Something I think they'll have to do against a Mountain View team that has put up 40+ in their last 2 games behind both the arm of Jackson Sigler and the running of Ike Daniels and Tyler Perry. The Wildcats will need some impact plays from budding defensive star Kris Jones and their Dline in order to slow down BP and avoid a upset. This is the best start in program history for the Wildcats, but this may be their toughest test yet.

Prediction: Brooke Point 24 Mountain View 38

UPSET ALERT

#2 King George (6-0) at Eastern View (4-3)

Lol, this is a good time to remind my readers that just because a game appears on my Upset Alert, it does NOT mean I'm predicting the upset will happen. But I do believe that this game has potential to get a little weird. Eastern View very similarly to Brooke Point has simply had the ball not bounce their way a couple of times this season and are a couple of moments away from being 7-0 Heartbreaking losses to Spotsy, Chancellor and JM have them where they are now. And when your in the position that KG is in it can be easy to get a little complacent and walk in to a late season match-up on the road against an angry, talented Eastern View team. Not that I'd expect the Foxes coaches to fail to give their players the proper warnings about the trap they could walk into tonight. This is your classic trap game, no question about it. Look for Eastern View to try and keep the ball away from the explosive KG offense by staying on the ground with Huseby and Williams. If they can't do that this game will likely get out of hand like the other games the Foxes have played.
