540 Athletes Week 6 Preview

We are moving past the half way point for most teams as district play is now in its second week, let's see what we are in store for tonight.

Where I was right:

Lock of the Week, Both intriguing matchups, and my upset alert were all accurate last weekend, sometimes you just strike gold...

Where I was wrong:

The last two weeks I have predicted North Stafford to score sub 17 points. They've proved me wrong, their offense may have found some rhythm which is an issue for other teams in the district.

LOCKS OF THE WEEK

Rashaud Pernell - Hudl

#6 Colonial Forge (2-2) vs Highland Springs (2-2)

I'm not exactly happy to be typing this right now, but it will take almost everything to go Colonial Forge's way in order for them to beat Highland Springs tonight. I certainly hope that I'm wrong and if this were almost any other year I'd never put them here as a team I expect to lose. We have seen Forge get dominated by extremely physical teams like Stone Bridge and Unity Reed this season. Highland Springs will be just as physically imposing which will present problems for a Colonial Forge offense that has not been successful in the air. You know who I'm rooting for but hope alone won't aide the Eagles tonight

INTRIGUING MATCHUPS

Brooke Point (2-1) at #3 Riverbend (4-1)

Could you call this an upset alert? Ehh maybe but this wouldn't be as shocking as some may think if Brooke Point were to win. Riverbend showed a lot of fight in their last win battling back from a 21 point deficit to defeat the pesky Wolverines from North Stafford. An now they're back in the role of favorites. But Brooke Point is no push over the tandem of Noah Sanders in the air and Daniel Coles on the ground makes Brooke Point a formidable foe for the Bears. The difference maker in this one will be the health of the Black Hawks and their ability to shake the rust off from a 2 week layoff.

Prediction: Brooke Point 23 Riverbend 41

#9 North Stafford (2-2) at Massaponax (0-1)

High school football: Massaponax airs it out in 38-0 romp over Riverbend | High School | fredericksburg.com

It seems like every game the Wolverines play in is a interesting one. Both of these teams fell in hard fought games last week. The Wolverines have lost both of their 2 losses by a combined 2 points. Ponax has struggled to make key stops in the 1 and half games that they have played up to this point. Make no mistake, tonight is a must win for both teams if they want to make the playoffs in a bloated Class 5D region.

Prediction: North Stafford 20 Massaponax 23

UPSET ALERT

Culpeper (3-2) at #2 King George (3-0)

Alright Culpeper players/fans. For the past 2 weeks you've been very vocal about the "disrespect" we have been showing you by not including you in our top 10 or honorable mentions. Wins over Faquier, Liberty, and Caroline are nothing, with all due respect to those teams there is only 1 win between them combined. If you want to convince us that you're a top 10 team in the 540 you need to do it against a team like KG. Do I think the Blue Devils will win tonight? If I'm being completely honest, no I don't however do I think they can compete and make King George earn it? Absolutely if Culpeper can keep it on the ground with Terrell and get yards and drain clock, I think this one will be in striking distance late. However, I think that King George will have to much firepower in the end for the Blue Devils. If Culpeper is who they keep telling me they are, expect a game closer than what you expect.
